A New Rotator Rail And Other Changes Make Silhouette Window Shadings Better Than Ever.

Standard Silhouette Window Shadings are now being made differently than they have been before.  The changes recently implemented make very little difference in appearance but will make great strides toward improved function and reliability of Silhouette shadings.  The changes all center around a new round rotator rail.  The previously used rotator rail was "lobed" which resulted in a squared off appearance when Silhouette Fabric was rolled up into the headrail.  The new appearance is not only more aesthetically pleasing, but will also result in fewer wrinkles that sometimes result when when shadings are left in a rolled position for an extended period.

Along with the new roller there are some other changes.  An internal mechanism is now being used to provide the lower limit, rather than relying on the spring-loaded standard limit assembly that formerly provided both the upper and lower limit.  The new upper limit has now spring.  It is ratcheted into the proper position for each shading to provide a stop as the shading is rolled up.  It no longer rides against the fabric like the previously used system.

The New Lower Limit Assembly provides a reliable internal stop at the lower end of the shading and positively protects the shading by preventing it from  rolling up on the back side of the roller, which can damage the fabric.  This is similar to the lower limit that has been used with Vignette® window shadings for years, so it's known to be reliable.

The New Ratchet Limit Assembly is designed to work in conjunction with the new Lower Limit Assembly.  Unlike the previously used system, this limit is locked into position and does not come in contact with the fabric.

With the Shading Fully Raised, the new
Ratchet Limit Assembly stops the rail to
prevent over-rotation.

At this time, this changed affects Standard Silhouette window shadings and Tilt-Only shadings that are often used with sidelights and other narrow windows.

Note that Non-Standard Shadings will continue to use the lobed rail at this time.  This includes, Silhouette with PowerRise®, Motorized Silhouette Shadings ("hard-wired"), Two-on-One Headrail Shadings, Silhouette with UltraGlide™ and Nantucket shadings.  These changes will be phased in for these applications as testing is completed.

FAQ:
Frequently Asked Question About Converting
Silhouette Shadings To The New
Universal Rotator Rail System:

Why is Hunter Douglas making the conversion to Universal Rotator Rail (URR) on Silhouette® window shadings?

The Universal Rotator Rail system allows for wider and longer shadings and eliminates the need for any component to come into contact with the fabric. This reduces fabric wear and discoloration, and decreases operating noise that is inherent in the existing rotator (RR03) system. Since there are no springs in the new URR limit assembly, one of the primary sources of fabric snags and holes has been removed. In addition, the new rounder profile should help to reduce the occurrence of fabric wrinkling that is associated with the existing “lobed” rail. In general, the Universal Rotator system will improve the quality and functioning of Silhouette shadings.

What is the difference between the old and new style? Is there a visual difference?

The Universal Rotator Rail system incorporates a rounder rotator rail profile to increase support strength and reduce noise. In addition, the upper and lower limit stop systems have been separated. This eliminates the need for a lobed rotator rail profile and physical contact of the limits with the shading back sheer fabric.

Since most of the new parts are located inside the working mechanism of the shading, only the new “ratchet” limits will be visually detectable on a finished shading in most cases.

What components are actually changing?

There are a total of five parts that are changing – the rotator rail itself and its mating components. As mentioned above, only the new “ratchet” limits will be detectable by eye on a finished shading.

Will the specifications change for Silhouette shadings?

The specifications for Silhouette shadings will not change with the introduction of the Universal Rotator Rail. All max/min widths and drops will remain the same.

Can I still get the “old style” rail if I want it?

Yes, the previously used rotator rail system (RR03) will be available as an option on Silhouette shadings for approximately 12 months after the final phased conversion of RR03 to the Universal Rotator system. The RR03 option must be specified at the time of order.

Can I use old limits with new shades?

In a pinch it will do. The previously used “spring limit” assembly will function properly with the new Universal Rotator Rail. However, use of the old spring limits cancels the advantage of eliminating contact with the fabric and is therefore not recommended.

… How about new limits with old shades?
No. Silhouette® shadings using the existing RR03 rotator rail system will not operate properly with the new “ratchet limits”. Unlike the existing spring limit, the ratchet limit assembly only provides an upper limit stop (i.e. keeps the bottom rail from continuing to travel all the way into the headrail). This means that there would not be a lower limit mechanism when used with the existing RR03 rail. This allows a shading to continue to travel past its lowest point and roll up backwards. The result could be damage to the vane fabric that may not be covered under the Hunter Douglas warranty. It is therefore strongly recommended that you do not use the new ratchet limits with the existing RR03 rail system.

Is there a pricing change?

The suggested retail price of Silhouette shadings will not change with the conversion to the Universal Rotator Rail system.
